Trail Running Road Trip

Hi Folks

I'm thinking about organizing a trail running road trip.  I realize that jobs/kids/school/spouses/other commitments might prevent some from joining me on such a road trip, so at this point I'm trying to determine if there would be any interest in such an event.

Although the specific details of the trip would be determined by the people going, what I had in mind was a 2-3 day trip, 15-20 slow miles/day to a destination in Washington, eastern BC, or the Island.  The exact dates and logistics will be determined by those interested.

Please post if you are interested.

R2R2R re-visit

Thread died there with all attention on Stormy and Stein. What's the status now? Ean says back-channel maybe mid-October. I thinking maybe I'm in, certainly interested. Any other new interest in this adventure?

This just in from Peter

This just in from Peter Collins, Club Fat Ass member from Montreal, who ran R2R2R a couple of years back sporting different generations of Club Fat Ass shirts as he made his way through layers of earth's geological history ;-)

Tell your friends they're wimps for doing it in the fall :) when it's cooler.
Just kidding, it'll be much more enjoyable.
It's a BEAUTIFUL run! I'd be happy to exchange beta. Give them my email (pnd97 at hotmail.com).

R2R2R

The first weekend in October would work best for me, and I'd probably have a crew member that could join us as well.
Keep me in the loop, I'd love to pull this off!

R2R2R (Rim to Rim to Rim)

I was pacing David Crerar at the Vancouver 100 this weekend.  It came up that he had done this run  and loved it.  Here's his feedback

Here's some visuals for the Grand Canyon R2R2R:http://picasaweb.google.com/dacvan

David thinks September/October is the best time to go as it's dry and cool, but before the snow falls.

R2R+

Ean, it looks like there are a couple of people who have expressed interest in doing this run.  Do you think it's worthwhile to seriously look at planning something for the Fall?  From what I can tell, the following people may be interested:

Gilles
Ean
Geoff Palmer
Gary Robbins
Andrea

I also know someone who may be interested in helping to crew (i.e. arrange a pickup at the other rim if it's just a R2R trip).

Might be something to discuss while training/pacing for STORMY!

Let me know what you think.

Late September / October?

Glad to hear you're keen, Andrea.  I've spoken with several people who have done this.  Sounds like the end of September or up to mid-October before the snow flies is a good time for the R2R2R.

Gilles is a hammerhead.  He'll run anything!  =;-)

I'll see you at STORMY, but I'm sure it will be only briefly as you blast past me.

Early October

I think early October would be the best time for me - maybe the Thanksgiving weekend or the following weekend?  I'm actually out in Ontario, but could either fly into Vancouver and drive down with everyone (assuming you were driving down) or fly directly into Arizona.  I have an event in Vancouver that I'd like to go to on Thursday the 18th, so if we were to leave the next day and head down that could work out really well for me.  Otherwise, the Thanksgiving weekend could also be good since there is the extra holiday in there.

I won't be at STORMY myself, but hope it is a fantastic time.  Would love to be out there pacing some people....

Let me know your thoughts on dates/timing and maybe we can get the others to throw in their 2 cents on timing.

Speak soon

I'm out

I have a packed running schedule all through summer with lots of travelling. Plus we're going to Rome for the first two weeks of Octover. That leaves me with absolutely no flexibility in terms of vacation time. But I'm still very young so there's hope in the future.

Grand Canyon

R2R

I'm in.

To the Canyon and down

You go, guys. The Grand Canyon is as amazing as you'd imagine. Years ago, yikes it is now decades ago, I ran from the south rim down to dip my feet in a bit of the Colorado and then trudged up again in the same day. I noticed several years ago when I took my daughter to Arizona that the same trail now sports signs advising against such behaviour.
If you can work the logistics of time and distance- go for it.
Meanwhle, if anyone has ideas for a scaled down version of less time in a vehicle, slow and easy trotting time on the feet, I'd love to talk....

Now you have my attention!

I'd be highly interested in a R2R run.

I would more than likely be pressed for time, so a quick trip would be best. Like Ean I have not seen the G.C., but have always wanted to.

Keep me informed.

Grand Canyon

I've never seen the Grand Canyon, let alone run in it.  I've always been interested in the stories I've heard of folks running rim to rim.  Kind of warm in the summer.  Probably a solid day drive there, a solid day of running and a solid day home.  Maybe more?  I'm keen to explore the possibilities with anyone who is interested.

R2R - I'm interested

I read a great article on the R2R in Trail Runner last year sometime and it definitely planted a seed.  I'd be interested in exploring the idea - can you keep me in the thread?

my ideas seem lame now!

Hey Ean

A rim to rim run would be pretty sweet.  Stopping only for gas I think the drive could be done in 20 hours.  Might be something to plan for spring or fall as to avoid the extreme heat.

Running road trip...

It would be logistically easier to make it road and trail.
I was thinking along these lines.
1)Run from Victoria via the Lochside trail trail to Brentwood Bay (25K)
2) taking the ferry to Bamberton and run to Shawnigan Lake.(20K)
3)Run the logging roads to Renfrew.(25K)
4)Run  the JDF trail to Jordan river.(50K)
5)Run to Sooke and take the Goose trail back to Victoria.(15K)+(35K)
4 days would do it.
