Soliciting Input - Any interest in a Flash event in the Egmont area?

Since we are going to miss the Marathon Shuffle this weekend and Sunshing in September feels so far away, I am considering scheduling a Flash run on the Suncoaster Trail (Sunshine Coast) for early to mid summer. Although I am still trying to track down maps, I think we could manage a 15-25K out and back, predominantly on mountain bike trails, heading south from the Egmont area towards Pender Harbour and Garden Bay.

Here's where I need your help - if I plan this... will anyone come? Please add your comments!

Further fleshing of the idea:

Distance: somewhere between 15-30k

When: 6 June 2010 (tentative, depending on feedback)  Let me know your preference! Considering a Sunday morning run that would give anyone coming down from the Powell River area a chance to come in on a morning ferry and anyone coming up from Vancouver a chance to come up on the Saturday. (It's a bit far for day of travel from Vancouver, but a few campgrounds, cabins, motels in the Egmont area). Early'ish start on Sunday would give time to get back to Vancouver Sunday night.

If we kept the run at a shortish distance, we could plan a post-run bbq at our cabin in Earls Cove (for those unfamiliar with the area - trust me, it's nearby...) I'll even do some baking.

Some information on the area and trail can be found at http://www.trailpeak.com/trail-Ruby-Lake-Klein-Lake-Travers-near-Sechelt-BC-219. This is a description of a 4k portion of the trail but it's about the most info I can find at this point. Interesting to note that this site ranks the trail as "difficult" but if I can manage it, I expect absolutely anyone can! And given out and back, easy to modify distances.

Tentative date for Egmont Flash run - June 6, 2010

It looks like there is some interest in an Egmont flash run this summer and it seems like picking a date will be helpful.

I propose Sunday, June 6th as the date - with the caveat that it may change based on responses and confirmation of trail work. For anyone interested, this is the same weekend as (wait for it....) EGMONT DAY! Egmont Day is held on June 5th and celebrates life in Egmont (yes, there is enough to fill a day.) I'm still waiting on final plans for the party but it usually entails a hamburger eating contest, a salmon bbq at the community hall and a parade (I'm serious - we now have a firetruck!) If anyone wanted to make a weekend of it, there are motels, cabins and campgrounds around to book.

Based on feedback from the Shuffle, we can amend the route to start at the ferry terminal, permitting the folks coming from Saltery Bay to walk onto the ferry. This adds about 1k of highway to the route before we get onto the trail, or 2k of road if we end up going North Lake Road to Klein Lake.

Let me know if anyone is interested! I will post further details (start time, etc) shortly. Jackie

June 6th

I'm planning to do the Vancouver 100 this year but I'll be away until the day before.

June 6th wouldn't really work for me - I guess unless I finish very quickly and feel a lot better than I'm expecting too.   The two weekends before that don't work for me either.  I'm not asking you to plan your event around me though.

1 km on the highway would make for a nice warmup anyway - but wouldn't parking be an issue at the ferry terminal?

Do you know Greg who manages the Back Eddy?  He used to book my band in Egmont at the community centre.  I think he is also involved with Egmont Day if my memory serves me right.  He's a good guy.

Sorry June 6th doesn't work

Hi Ryan, good luck at the Vancouver 100 - I'll cross my fingers that you finish really early and make it to this run (have to come up with a proper name shortly...) but if not, June 19th will be the Sunshine in September recon flash event. Sibylle and I are heading out to finetune the course and description for the actual S in S event. Perhaps you might make it to that one?

Also, I'm planning another event that will likely also be a flash but this one a bit further UP the sunshine coast, starting at the Saltery Bay ferry terminal and heading north on the Sunshine Coast Trail. This one only came to mind last night, so no dates in mind yet - maybe the start of the august long weekend. My goal is to have one Club Fat Ass event up the sunshine coast each month this summer - any ideas appreciated!

Possible Egger

You're right, it is close enuff for Powell Riverites to make a go of it. Same "if" as other posts though: With a hard date i can start to drum up some bodies...i'll keep an eye out for developments. i hope it works out, these areas have a lot of potential!

Escape to Egmont flash details posted

Hi! Thanks for you input! Dates/times have now been posted for the Escape to Egmont flash event. Details can be found here. Hope to see you and some of the other Powell River contingent!

Please let me know if you have any input or suggestions to better accommodate everyone.

Not looking promising...

Hmmm, 118 reads and no comments.

I'm guessing this one isn't getting off the ground. If you have an opinion (for, against, doesn't even have to be related to this posting...) let me know!

I would be interested but...

Without a date tough to say if I could make it.

I plan on heading ito the area and renting a boat to go try to scout out a route between the tip the Queen's Reach and the Helena Creek FSR's in July as part of a route from Powell River to North Vancouver.

Generally I'm off on weekends but I don't know my days off at that time yet.  I wouldn't host it on my account though.  If anyone else is interested I could drive from Vancouver and give you a ride so long as I can make it.

Hmm is right.  I would love

Hmm is right.  I would love to come, but we won't be able to throw in another trip to the Sunshine Coast.  However, I think with the Marathon Shuffle and the Sunshine in September you should be able to get some local interest.

I suggest that you post it as a Flash with a date convenient to you.  If it's up before the Shuffle, I can announce it at the pub as well as through the follow-up email I will send to everybody.  Depending on the response from that, you can fine tune the plan.
