Please join Club Fat Ass and Runner's Den for a entertaining and informative evening  November 22nd that explores the lunatic fringe of running:  The 100-miler.

This free event is hosted by Runner's Den and organized by Club Fat Ass.  Everyone is welcome to attend, however, seating is limited and preregistration is required.  Please register online at: Registration - Speaker Series Western States

There is a horse race in the gold rush country of California called the Tevis Cup.  When his horse went lame at the start of the race 34 years ago, Gordie Ainsley decided to challenge the course on foot.  Gordie ended up running the 100-mile distance faster than some of the horses.  Like Forrest Gump, he started a trend. There are now hundreds of 100-mile running races around the world.

The Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run is the one that started it all.  Like Ironman Hawaii to the triathlete or the Boston Marathon to the road runner, the Western States 100 is the event all 100-mile runners want to complete.  "States", as it is called by those who know it, is so popular hopeful entrants have to win a lottery to get the opportunity to toe the line.

A surprising number of runners from BC have competed at "States".  Several more have entered the lottery and hope to participate in 2007.  During the evening, a group of those runners will share their their  experiences at  Western States and answer questions about how they train and race a 100-mile run so you, too, can get your application in for 2007!

When:  Wednesday 22 November, 6:30 - 8:30 pm
Where:  Runner's Den, 239 Newport Drive, Port Moody, BC (click here for a map)

The panel of speakers includes:  Wendy Montgomery, Andy Nichol, Ron Adams, Karl Jensen, Enzo Federico, Glen Pace and Gilles Barbeau and will be moderated by Ean Jackson.  Each of the panelists has completed the Western States 100.  As a group, the panelists have also completed dozens of 100-mile runs and many hundred ultra marathons at the front of the pack, the back of the pack and everywhere in between.  All have committed to wearing the famous belt buckle they earned the hard way.  All have committed to sharing their motivation and success secrets for the benefit of the running community, so bring lots of questions.

For this special evening, Runners Den will be providing a special Club Fat Ass discount on all items in the store, so take the opportunity and stock up for Christmas.  There will also be some great draw prizes for those who preregister, so be sure to sign up soon to avoid missing out. 'Hope to see you on Wednesday 22 November!
