2009 Vancouver 100 – Event Report

How do I put into words how great this event is and how much it affects the runners and the club? It is possible but daunting.

I’ve been involved with Club Fat Ass for many years, almost since the beginning. I stick with it because I get to do what I want (run on the local trails with old friends and make new friends). It’s easy to sign up for events and see clearly what I’m getting myself into before the Event Host says “go!” The challenge is ready and the purpose is obvious. So what is it about the Vancouver 100 that astounds me every year and makes it so different from the other events?

It’s freaking hard. Ya that better be obvious by now. But there are other very tough events that get put on that are special as well. So this means I have to be very careful about who comes along for the ride.

It’s also very local and thus very accessible. I get a couple of requests a year from people to do the run that have absolutely no clue how rough and tumble the Baden Powell course is over the 30 miles each way. Once I give them a dose of reality they kindly offer to train for a few more years before considering this event again.

I love doing it. Not just the running part. But getting people together that may or may not know each other and seeing what becomes of their lives and mindsets over two days. They are asked to push themselves to the limits both the runners and the crews. We’re looking out for people’s well being and their sanity of course. Their health part is a bit tricky since we aren’t necessarily professional caregivers but we do have a lot of collective experience at this stuff. And the mental part, well, that’s probably the biggest surprise each year. Those that you figure are totally up to the challenge may or may not make it intact. Those that you figure might not understand what it takes to complete the run come around and dramatically surprise you with their tenaciousness and determination. That’s the part I enjoy the most including in myself for my two finishes in 2005 and 2008.

The Vancouver 100 involves lots of people. Especially considering how few actually complete the course. Each runner is required to have a dedicated, 24-hour crew. If I get out there and run a section I try my best to still be around to help the crews and pick up the slack where required. And I know that lots of you are excited to read the reports and see the results. Hopefully we did okay to keep you up to date and excited about the finishes. Thank you very much to everyone that helped make this one a success no matter how little or much you did.

So, congratulations are in order. Karl Jensen finished the Vancouver 100 for the third time. This is the most anyone has done it (along with Gilles Barbeau’s three finishes in previous years). What’s best about Karl is that he knows his limits, he’s willing to test them and he’s more than willing to help a fellow runner. Way to go Karl and thank you for participating again. Our only other finisher out of five starters is Kirsten Ramage. Kirsten has been training with the Fools and proving how great a runner she has become. Only two other women have completed this course and in 2009 Kirsten set the new record for time. Amazing and fantastic Kirsten!

If I could change one thing about this year’s event I would have wished to be at the finish line when Karl and Kirsten arrived. My intentions were good but execution was sadly poor. I set my alarm and when it rang I promptly turned it off and went back to sleep after thinking there was no reason to get up at 3:30 am yet again. How terribly wrong that was. I can only hope they’ll forgive me because I’m sure it was a great finish.

Will it happen again in 2010? As we know, 2010 is a special year for Vancouver. I know there is interest in the 2010 Vancouver 100 already but it is a long way off. So much will happen between now and then including lots of special CFA events.

Make sure to keep training and having fun and be sure to tell people about the hardest 100km trail run anywhere.

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations Karl and Kirsten - well done!  What an amazing time to boot!  Kirsten, you are now the fastest woman and only the third to have completed this adventure!

And congratulations to everyone else who participated!

Good luck to both of you on your upcoming 100s

I'm amazed we're still running this one after five years. And it looks like there is serious interest for 2010. Mark it on your calendars: Saturday June 5, 2010.

Craig

Unable to attend in 2010

Unfortunately, I'll have to wash my hair and clean my purse on June 5, 2010.

Congratuations all of you!!

Way to go Craig on another sucessful V100! If you want, I'll lend you another alarm clock for next year.

Having done teh 100km in the snow twice already, I was really hoping for a snow-free year (which is the reason I chickened out)....I suppose that with 2010 Olympics coming next year, it might very well be our luck that there will very little snow.

One can always hope.

Craig Moore's picture

you got your wish

I was up on Hollyburn today Glenn. It was warm, fun, and the snow is melting fast. I'm expecting quick times this year and I say you need to show up and give it another whirl. The amount of snow is equal to a typical mid-June snowpack so if you're looking for one last snowshoe ya best git up there now!

WOW - Great job fat asses!

I'm speachless - well done everyone!!!

how cool was that?

The Vancouver 100 tested the best of 'em once again. It's amazing what we can put ourselves through as runners and crew and have a fantastic time making new friends and learning more about everyone.

Please get your times and distances into me so we can put this one down on the records permanently.

Congrats to Kirsten & Karl

Congrats to you both on a great run, particularly Kirsten, 100 km on the BP should have you ready for your first 100 miler.

Craig, thanks for organizing, I turned around and headed back at Lynn Headwaters, with the short out and back at the beginning, I did roughly 32 km in 4:40.  Thanks everyone for a good day on the trails.

Congratulations to all!

Congratulations Kirsten and Karl, hope you had an awesome final 25km. Craig had mentioned this would likely be the toughest event I'd ever taken a swing at, and no the BP does not disappoint. I was telling my sister that when you tell people "Yes, but I've done sillier things", this is it

What a great time, though. Wow. I will be back next year for sure.

Some thanks are in order though

Craig -- thanks for the event/the advice and being at every point.

Pano/Gord -- Thanks for the company and route finding. You guys are EXCELLENT!

Ean -- thank you for the good spirits at Cleveland Dam. You always have enough energy that it infuses into someone who's pretty tired by that point.

The biggest thanks to my wife, who patiently chauffeurs my incredibly aromatic gear around and gives up huge portions of her personal time to be my support crew. If I wasn't already married to her, I certainly would be now!

I always come back to what a tremendous group of people ultrarunners are. Couldn't think of a better way to spend a day or a nicer group of folks to do it with.

Thanks to all and have a great Sunday!

Dave

what a nice day that was ...

and it was great having you and your gang along for the ride Dave.

Craig, thanks for a great event...

and the opportunity for a tremendous challenge.  It was certainly a course I would not have contemplated until I started running with CFA and the Fools.  The run itself was pleasantly uneventful (no wildlife encounters and no injuries!) and the weather co-operated, allowing a wonderful view from Eagle Bluffs.  Thanks to Shauna for crewing, the Fools (Karl, Gilles, John and Chad), Baldwin, Laddie and Craig for the running company (especially to Karl for sticking with me the whole way, despite my tendency to take wrong turns!), for the other crew who provided great moral support and food along the way, and to Ean for the excellent pacing at night, a time we greatly needed it.  Sorry to miss you on the trails this morning, Laddie.  What an experience!  I look forward to the party tonight!

Time and distance

12:18, 60ish km. I turned around about 1km past Lawson Connector on the Hollyburn Chute at the 6 hour mark. So pretty even splits including a 10 minute waiting for the bear to move on the BP trail past Mountain Hwy.

Doug Keir was my crew so I'd like for him to get a point.

this from Karl at 5:30 am:

"23:35 for both of us, although Kirsten touched the fire hydrant first. Goodnight"

Congratulations Kirsten and Karl.

Congratuations you two!!!

Awesome work guys - A huge congratulations... I figured I missed you by just a few minutes in the early hours of this am.... really sorry about that.I managed to reach deep cove at 4:20 am to pick up my car (just 50 minutes or so with a nice easy trotting pace) running from my house and passing many taxi's, a few skunks and one racoon....went back up the mt to the baden powell crossing at Mt. Seymour and figured I must have missed you.

Well done and hat's off to you both - Awesome work:)

Kirsten and Karl Looking Strong

I ran with Kirsten and Karl from Cleveland Dam to Mosquito Creek.  Both were lucid and running well:  Kirsten powering up the hills and Karl flying the downhills.

It was just before midnight when I left them.  They will almost certainly finish, but if anyone out there is looking for something to cure their insomnia, I'm sure they would appreciate your company.

It's a wonderful evening to be running the Baden Powell trail.  While I'd not call it hot, I was comfortable running in shorts and a t-shirt.  The lights of the city were visible from time to time throught the trees.  It smelled like California... a dry, dusty trail smell filtered by pines.

Thanks for having me along, Kirsten and Karl.  You made my weekend!

Craig Moore's picture

after 3/4

It's a beautiful mild evening at Cleveland Dam, the Vancouver 100 3/4 mark.

Dave came in to Cleveland Dam with his pacer Gord around 9:15 pm. Dave was looking fine but was concerned about some nausea. After a break and some coffee he started up the road to Grouse with Gord. Dave's bike roadie brother and sister accompanied.

Karl and Kirsten came in around 10:20 pm. They chowed down and prepared for the last 1/4 to Deep Cove. Kirsten is looking strong and Karl is testing her on the technical downhills. Grouse will be dark for them and the next 6 hours will be fairly slow but will have Ean Jackson to share the trail with for a while at least.

Sibylle brought yummy home made potato salad with purple potatoes and all kinds of great ingredients. I had some and it was the best meal I've had today.

Alas, when Dave got to Grouse, his wife Helen called me and said Dave was calling it a day. But I know Dave has his eye on the 2010 Vancouver 100 already. Way to go Dave.

Baldwin and Laddie both had big runs and came back to cheer the others on.

The final update will come in a few hours.

Cleveland Dam Update

Just back from Cleveland Dam. Kirsten and Karl left there around 22:35 after refueling and changing socks. They both looked strong and were in good spirits.  Ean walked off with them into the dark and will get them to Mosquito Creek.  Expected arrival time at Deep Cove at 4:30 if all goes well.

Dave Berg - with pacer Gord Thompson - came in a bit before Kirsten and Karl, but unfortunately was suffering from nausea and had to call it a night at the Grouse parking lot.

Sibylle's picture

Cypress Bowl Update

Dave Berg and Gord Thompson reached Cypress Bowl and left there around 19:20.  Expected arrival time at Cleveland Dam will be just before 21:00

Kirsten and Karl left Cypress Bowl at 19:55pm and are expected at Cleveland around 21:30.

Gilles and John are calling it a day at Cypress.

Ron and Bryce Adams accompanied the gang up Black Mountain from Nelson Creek.

I'll be heading out to meet the runners at Cleveland Dam.  Potatoes and chips at the ready...maybe some coffee...???

Nelson Creek Turnaround Reached

Just talked to Craig.  Dave Berg has just left the turn-around and Kirsten, John and Karl are at the turnaround right now.

Craig's prediction is that they won't reach Cleveland Dam before 9:00pm.  Good luck everybody.

Results

What results? Surely you don't expect results yet do you? The event is not even half over. But I can tell you that there were 10 people at the start line with at least 4 of them surely well prepared to complete the full Vancouver 100.

On the way to the start line in Deep Cove we got a sprinkle of rain. I also saw deer on the road and police at the side by Cates Park. But I would not let any of that stop me from getting to the start line in time. Once I rolled in to the quiet and empty parking lot the others soon followed. Well, most of them. We brought our game faces and our trail brains and suited up. The briefing was brief and the photo was done by Ron Adams who came along to see us off. Laddie and Baldwin showed up in the nick of time and we were ready to go at 5:00 am sharp.

Desmond wasted no time taking the lead with Dave right behind. The rest of us were busy chatting away like it was a slow Sunday stroll with all the time in the world to get there. Des and Dave continued to take the lead and clear the spider webs and chase the bears away for us while the big group of Karl, John, Kirsten, Gilles, Baldwin, Laddie and me pretty much stuck together until Lynn Canyon and perhaps beyond. I made a quick dash across the Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge and b-lined for the bathroom after disposing of my trash load. A thorough washing of the hands and I was back on the BP and heading toward Mountain Highway where I would be hooking up with Sibylle to do the remainder of my run to Cleveland Dam. As it turned out we followed a trail down beside Nancy Greene Way and went all the way to the yellow beacon (home for Sibylle).

I didn't see the others after Lynn Canyon but I did hear from some fellow runners (Penny and Rod) coming toward us that Des and Dave were still in fine form. I hope Dave can keep up that pace until the finish 'cause it's a good one. Des was heading to home a few km from the Dam as he has for most or all of the V100's. Consistency is everything.

So now, after a ride home from Sibylle and a good cleansing, I'm off to get my car and camera from the Cove. I'll be posting the starter photo asap and keeping you updated.
