Our hope is to make this event totally self-supporting. In other words, do all of the organization beforehand and also participate. This would be an impossible dream without a lot of behind the scenes help.

Please contact us with a short email note if you would like to help out.

Many thanks to:

Norma Castillo, aka Mrs. Jackal: Carlos' wife, Norma, manned the turnaround aidstation table and donated her pottery trophies.

TrailRunner: Thank you for the 2 gift subscriptions to your popular magazine as draw prize. Also for offering members of Club Fat Ass a special discounted subscription price

FAQ

Home | Registration | Course | Agenda | Backgrounder
Thanks! | Results | Contact | FAQ

Q:

I've never done a trail run before. Is this a good place to start?

A:

Yes, it is very scenic, well maintained and safe.

Q:

Can I run less than 25K or more than 50K?

A

Absolutely! Some thoughts:
You can run the first leg out to Caleb pike for 13K, the Half Monty 25K or back to the Pike from the bridge for 37K. The Full Monty would bring you right back where you started from.

Q:

How tough is the course?

A:

Tough question to answer! How far are you running? How fast? How well are you trained?

Q:

Do I really need to print off the course instructions and bring them with me?

A:

Not really, if you are prepared to run with a local! If you want to lead I would suggest you do.

Q:

This event is free, but for Club Fat Ass members only. How do I get into the club?

A:

There is no hazing ceremony like the Hash House Harriers! Runners interested in having fun in the great outdoors are welcome to join online for a nominal fee.

Q:

Can I wait until the last minute and join at the start?

A:

Yes, but we prefer you don't. You will not be allowed to take out an annual Club Fat Ass membership on the day-of-event, so you won't get a cool t-shirt. Last minute registration makes it very difficult to organize and coordinate the event.

Q:

It's a free world. What's to stop me from just running the course.

A:

Nothing...in fact, we encourage you to run the course often in training! We prefer that you do not 'bandit' the course on event day, however. If you insist, please don't take any of the aid intended for members. You will not get recognition in the results or be eligible for any draw prizes and you'll have to wear a black patch over one eye at the party. Furthermore, you won't be allowed into future events until you come clean with past membership dues.

Q:

What if I get lost?

A:

You shouldn't get lost if you refer to the course instructions where you are faced with a choice of direction. If you do feel you are lost, ask someone. If you always get lost, bring a cell phone or a quarter, just to be sure.

Q:

Do I get credit for any time I spend off-course?

A:

Are you kidding? Getting lost is a rite of passage for Club Fat Ass. Most of the time, you can blame yourself for not paying attention. If you do find an obvious mistake in the course directions, point it out to the Event Host at the finisher party for a free beer!

Q:

Couldn't you mark the course like just about every other race I've ever been in? It's a pain to pause and read instructions.

A:

Club Fat Ass events are supposed to be different than every other race you've ever been in. As an Event Host, we have to commit to not putting chalk/flour on the ground, hanging surveyor tape in the trees, painting rocks with arrows, putting up signs or doing anything that might leave a trace of the race. Besides, having to read written course directions tends to slow down the faster runners.

Q:

What is the 'Rule of the Trail'?

A:

If you pack it in, you can pack it out. (That means don't you dare litter!) Leave nothing but your footprints on the course. We strongly encourage you to pick up any trash you find along the trail and to present it to the Event Host at the finisher party. There may be a recognition award for the person who packs out more than they packed in.

Q:

What if I have to heed the call of nature.

A:

There are washrooms at Caleb Pike parking lot, no running water though, I will try and set up a lemonade stand with water at the Pike.

Q:

What should I bring on race day?

A:

Whatever you figure you will need given the weather, the distance you propose to run, your physical fitness on the day and your plans for after the run. Some thoughts are on the event agenda.

Weather. Click here for a local forecast.

Distance. Since you are an experienced endurance sports athlete, you should know what you need. Water and food is an issue, so we recommend you carry at least 2 large bottles of fluid and plenty of trail chow.

Fitness. Since you are an experienced endurance sports athlete, you should know what you are capable of. If in doubt, take it easy and go a shorter distance.

Q:

I am supposed to be self-sufficient because there is no aid provided. Can I get a friend to come out and give me food and drink along the route?

A:

Absolutely! In fact, it would be nice if your friend were to help everyone. Click on crew tasks and aid station ideas for some thoughts on what some of the options are. Please have your friends and family members contact us and we will do all we can to insure that they have fun, as well.

Q:

Can I bring my friends and family to the finisher party even if they didn't run or volunteer?

A:

Absolutely!

Q:

Are there any trophies, prizes or other hardware or freebies?

A:

If you assume there's no aid, no course marking, no t-shirt, no enthusiastic spectators and no prizes or freebies of any sort, you might be pleasantly surprised. Best you plan to show up at the finisher party!

Q:

When will the 'official' results be available?

A:

We hope to have the results results up on the website within 24 hours of the finisher banquet. We will also distribute the results to major local and national ultrarunning communities.

2012 - Year 8 - Full Monty

ReportI remember saying to Alan last year when three of us slogged it out in a torrential downpour, that if I had to run the Full Monty solo, that I would run it naked...Well, I lied!Mind you by the three quarter way point I hadn't seen a soul, then my possible streak was broken by a young couple of hikers with four dogs.

I am not really dissapointed, I just think that until a bridge is built between our two running communities, there will be little interaction.

I am quite prepared to host this event, and look forward to seeing the number swell back into double digits!

Until then I live in hope...

2013 - Year 9 - Full Monty

Event Photo:
20 July 2013 - 6 Starters, 6 Finishers

Report:The 9th! annual "Monty"

This fact really shocked me wow...

This year we had a very tallented and friendly group of trail running aficionados, within minutes of the start the six person group had split up into a lead group of three. With me as the leader/tour goide. and the caboos group with Stefan (lead foot) as trail interpretor.

He had to reign back, the stomping fillies, a tad as they were charging all of the early climbs and we destined to crash and burn later in the sweltering 28oC conditions.Dan Vargo, a proven winner (Fat Dog) and Quentin Proud (a trail rookie from Nanaimo) managed their enthusiasm for the trails, and wisely stuck with the ED's pace for the first 1/4 of the course, and after the first turnaround at the Caleb Pike refuiling depot, took the initiative to break away from the playleader! I was left to return solo to the start location, passing the chatty caboose party shortly after starting leg two. With 10 minutes to spare for the potential second wave start. Unfortunately, this did not materialize, so at 11:00am I headed back into the "jungle", this time with Sandy T. my chief volunteer and potential "wave two" starter. She needed a couple of hours of trails that day so I invited her to run with me for a while.Although we were within yelling distance of each other she gradually pulled away before making her turn for home.I slower still further, alowing the two girls to reel me in so that I would have company for the fourth and final leg.We had a wonderful chat all the way back and got a great opportunity to discuss future race plans, they will both be running the 50 miler is Squamish soon, and with the "Monty" under their belts, fell confident that will kick so serious butt.

My one regret was that I overlooked docking my iPod over night,(blame it on the beers) and was greeted with a low battery message, right from the get-go!(no mavie this year!)

Thank you S. and the CFA, for allowing me the chance to host this almost "Classic" event.

Till next year...

2011 - Year 7 - Full Monty

 Finishers Photo - 16 July 2011

Report:

This was the first year that rain was a significant feature.

I was confused by the numbers of entrant this year, having check the website a couple of weeks back I though that I was going to get most, if not all the runners from last year plus four more.

I am not sure what happened in the ensuing 10 day, but we were whittled down to 4.

Charles Ramos, an Elk Beaver connection from this years race had signed up for the Full Monty, and sure enough, while running the preview course with some "Harrier" friends last week we saw him checking it out!

He did say that he thought the course was way tougher than he had imagined...

Unfortunately he surcame to an injury and had to cancel his attempt this year.

I put out some last minute invitations on various social media but found out that this weekend had three endurance events planned.

The Victoria over-distance running community is quite small, so ...

Anyways, not wanting to whine or complain,I forged on with my plans.

The day started off for me at 5:00am. The rain started at six, and didnt stop till Noon.

All the vegitation was heavy with water and we were all going to get our faces washed!

I was unclear if anyone was going to opt for the early start so I arrived in time for that eventuallity.

By 7:00 I knew that I had a four hour wait for my friends to arrive, and not having the luxury of a warm car to either shelter in of drive home, I was left with the options of staying put or doing an "out and Back".

Not having really prepared for a 50K, I decided to use my GPS to measure the new "Joselyn Jaunt" distance.

I needed to verify that this would be doable in a reasonable timefram ,to allow less energetic CFA spouses and S.O.'s

the chance to witness, first hand, these premium trails.

This also mean that I wouldn't die of hypothermia!

This done, I knew we were in for a wet one, and on my soggy return I changed into my swim shorts and waited for the guests to arrive for the sog-fest.

Alan, and Kelly honoured me with their presence and off we went.

Luckily we are all about the same pace so there was no splitting up or regrouping involved, and we all got an "A" reted workout.

We hit the Caleb Pike turnaround 10 minutes quicker than last week, refilled our drinks and headed back.

I kept dropping my hand-held and I was on three strikes, with Alen and two with Kelly! Friends...

After the last down section, with about a mile to go, we kind of booted it.

We didn't really speed up that much as that section is reasonably flat so there were no hiking break nor gravity assists, and I, by now, after my 12K preamble, was running on fumes. My little tank was empty!

Alan did finish a couple of minutes ahead of Kelly and I.

We managed a 3:24:XX.

We all found trash and removed it from the park.

I took part in two CFA events on the same day!

Did I win?

2010 - Year 6 - Full Monty

Carlos, the Jackal and Katie Teagirl on the trails of the Full Monty, a Club Fat Ass event

Carlos and Katie - happy on the trails. 17 July 2010

Reagan and Katie at the Full Monty, a Club Fat Ass trail running eventReport: Having spent zero time sleeping the night before, I got up at 4:30 and started doing all the stuff I had been thinking about all night.

Minimalism is me, and by the start of the day, I had at most eight people to guide through.
Mark was "Mr Monty" this year, he had come to run 50k.

Fortunately he had a buddie for the first leg, Jeff (the legend) Hunt from Timberman trail to Caleb Pike.
Unbeknownst to me Jeff had a plan to execute, which involved running 12.5k of the fabulous "Monty". Thanks Jeff for registering for your preview run, now you know the course.

After I sent them off, I had little to do till 11:00 when I was to start the "Mainland Invitational Challenge".
This year we had three. Reagan, Kate (a Saltspring island resident), and local lad, me.
We were planning to run together, but Kate had to buy body glide from the Running Room.
She told me to start without them and that they would catch me up.No problem...

I did a solo leg and got to Caleb Pike deciding to wait and see who came out of the bush...

Reagan appeared about ten minutes after, but no Kate.
He had taken the bypass trail on the main climb.
I think I missled him on the course description! He shaved three of the nicest kilometers off the run!

Kate popped out from the trail a few minutes later.

After a short refreshment break the happy trio set off, back to show Reagan what he had missed. It was nice to finally have some company on the run back. We laughed and joked all the way back, only managing to loose Kate just before the finish. She had switched into her Vibrams by then and had managed to loose her way a little, adding on about three bonus K!  It's all good...

  • Elise Maguire (custom) She left me a nice note and explained that she hiked the 25K time unrecorded - 1Point
  • carlos castillo (25km) I was the lone runner on the "classic" course...3:55:XX - 2 + 2 points
  • mark lesack (50km) "Mr. Monty" - 2 points
  • Justin Pozin (25km) DNS  - minus 1 point
  • Jeff Hunt (12.5km) Custom distance, Mark's pacer for the first leg. (fastest man on the day) - 1 crew point
  • Katie Longworth (28km) Custom distance, some cloathing issues...last girl standing.4:XX:XX - 2 points
  • Reagan White (22km) Custom distance, garbage points, he left me nothing! 3:47:XX 2 +1 points

Basically we all ran solo so we all won!

2009 - Year 5 - Full Monty

Report:

Sorry, that I have been so long in getting this summary done but this event has become so much part of me,that I forget that other people might want to read all about it!

What is it they say "a picture is worth 1000 words?"... so please watch the movie below ;-)

Stop Press News!!!

Next year it will start at 11:00 am. one hour later than past years.

You will have enough time to make it over and back and go to Tim Hortons.

I must say that this year's 5th running of this event, that I had the most fun.

Slowing down does have its advantages, especially when the 100 mile is my sport of choice.

Shane won the 1/2 Monty in an incredible time of 1:56:57, I hope he didn't take the Jocelyn bypass,no I'm pretty sure I saw him on the scenic loop.

Buddy Bhandar was second in the sprint event, he got a little turned around at the beginning but came in with a solid 2:43:33, Colette Tunstead won the female division in a time of 3:35.

Elizabeth and I ran the whole friggin thing together, and I was glad for that as I would probably pushed too hard if left to my own devises. It was hot out there today!
So in summation, 8 registered 5 started 5 finished. As it was we managed to secure a sub 8 hour finish for her first Ultra!
She recently came back from Squamish where she ran a "Brick" over two days over the course that she plans to run 50 miles for the "Stormy" Ultra.
She hung in there real good!
Now to work on the video...

2008 - Year 4 - Full Monty

19 July 2008- Daryl,Melody,Jack,Dave,Raf & Neal

This years version of the "legendary" Monty was the almost perfect sweep. Six brave souls took on the challenge in the blistering heat. Niel Isnor, from Stettler AB was wise to down grade, after the first loop, to the 1/2 Monty as he was nursing a knee issue, acquired in a recent race.(25K split 3:05:xx) Everyone else made there commitment, and accomplished their goals. The Full Monty was won by Rafael Albert in a great time of 5:35:XX, he lead from post to post, gamely pursued by Niel, till he dropped. Daryl Suen from Kamloops BC continued the task of keeping Rafael honest. He is training for a multi day event in the Amazon, and ran the whole 50K with a pack big enough for me to sleep in! He hung in for second place in a not too shabby time of 6:40:XX. The third pace slot whent to a first time Ultra-gal, Melody MacMillan, my running partner for the last loop. The ensemble was rounded off by my good buddy, Dave from Widby Island.Dave finished the second leg of his 25K with both his dogs, I minded the older, little dog, for the first leg and handed him off to his owner on the return leg. Dave had to give up most of his water for the hounds and managed to do the 25K on 1/2 a litre of defizzed cola, and half a litre H2O.(3:33:xx) Jack had a blast and was very happy with this years crop of athletes.(4:15:xx) I will attach the starting photo, and my movie of the event to my CFA Blog. ILTS!

2006 - Year 2 - Full Monty

Full Monty 2005So we all got home safely, just!.

Ludo, Don and I did the Full monty, and had a

blast seeing all the 1/2 Monty guys and gal coming back at us. Ludo made the turn before the start of the 1/2 Don and I saw them before the first big climb.

It was nice to see four Mainlanders made the trip. A couple of runners from Sooke, (Vince and Heather), gave us a bit of a scare doing a customFull Monty 2006 - Starter Photo version and finished as walking wounded, in 7 hours!
After coming off Joclyn hill they got a little turned around and ended back at Caleb Pike, by which time Norma and her mother had already packed up and gone home. so they had a hot hard slog to do with little to no fuel left.

Photo right: Start of the Full Monty - Ludo, Carlos and Donald

Ludo was first of the Full Monty trio in a time of 5:35.  Chris Tomkinson was first in the 1/2 in a time of 2:31. Tod, Roger, and James, had good runs finishing Between 2:37 and 2:45. Jackie Eddy from Sooke had a great run, she was flying. She had to be at a wedding....My buddyFull Monty 2006 Geoff had a touch of the colly wobbles but was looking forward to completing his two day triple, Baldwin too but Baldwin had other issues to contend with....

Photo left: Carlos, Baldwin and Donald at the fueling station.

I will have picture soon and a full set of tabulated results soon, with a few bonus points, for sweep(Baldwin) and trash colection (another Ball cap, and event host) for yours truely.
I Love This Sport!

2005 Starter Photo (minus the host, he must be behind the camera)

Seven souls turned up good and early for the first running of the Monty. We all ran the short course today.

Ludo did an amazing job and romped home in a blistering 2:25:28. He was gamely pursued by Peter Erickson of Ocean River. Unfortunately, Peter rolled an ankle trying to catch the flying Frenchman. He had 2:35:33 on his clock. Third man in was Pano Skrivanos of IRR. He was telling me about his runs on Mt. Newton. He hung with Geoff and I for the first two hours and when I told him we had 30 mins. to go he switched into the more anaerobic stuff that he trains for so well at the track... and bounded off on the down run to the finish in 2:41:36. Geoff and I seem to have formed a bond ever since I nearly met my maker the other day at his Fluffy Bunny event. We rolled up to the finish line bridge in 2:45:20. Lindsay was kind enough to run sweep today. She and Doug Bodnar came in at 3 hours.

Doug got an extra few points for picking up an empty beer bottle from the park. Thanks Doug! He said that he was looking all the time for trash and couldn't find any. The irony was that as we walked down to the Lake that's where he found it!

The swim was great. Ludo is still there on his towel reading his book.

The trophy winners today were Ludo for a course record and first male, Lindsay for first female and super-sweep/trail guide. Thanks Lindsay and yes, we all had a good time.

I took a whack of pic's with my throw away camera, but they will take a few days to process.(old school film.) Life is real good!
