A New Trail - Burnaby Mountain

Against better judgement I headed out for a run today. My right Achilles tendon had improved over the last few days - thanks to lots of ice - and I was hoping for a miraculous recovery....

Alas, it wasn't meant to be. The Achilles tendon felt stiff right from the start and didn't limber up either.

Injured...

How can an old injury that has been kept in check by regular stretching and specific strengthening exercises pop up out of the blue without warning?

If you know the answer to this I'd like to know if I can make this disappear as fast as it came?

January Progress Report -- So far so good

A full month into the new year, and I seem to be keeping my resolution quite well. Although I don't have a resolution event until the Dirty Duo in March, all my training goals have been met in January. 50 km/week, riding to school 3 times/week, eating better, and keeping it all in a log.

In many ways, the Yours Truly 50k is similar to Club Fat Ass events.

Enough is enough

A few month ago I happily blogged about running in the rain...How I loved it! Forget it. Don't hold me to it - enough is enough. Out of the last 44 days it rained 42 of them - hard!

My motivation is definitely fading. Last weeks training consisted of 2 half hearted weight sessions at home, one mid-week run, 2 hours of downhill skiing with my children, 2 hours of snowshoe hiking on Grouse and one guilt induced hour at the gym.

How is the rest of rain soaked Vancouver doing? What about the snow and ice in the rest of the country? How are the New Year's Resolutions coming along? Why don't you take a moment and fill us in on your training and how you deal with the weather. What the heck, if you live somewhere warm and dry you can share that too - rub it in!

Shirt Tales - chronicles of a Club Fat Ass shirt

Following my last outing (New Years Day CFA-50) I figured I might be shelved forever or worse, tossed into a bag for a local charity to pick up. Luckily, I was simply laundered and shelved. I felt like a benched athlete. Hey… it wasn’t my fault the Fat Ass 50 hadn’t gone as planned, don’t take it out on me buddy. Then, things started to look up. 10 short days later I was pulled off the shelf and tossed into a big bag. This wasn’t a small gym bag it was a big rolling tote bag. We were going on a road trip! Yahoo, where we going, where we going??

The next I new I was being unloaded in a hotel room somewhere. My running buddy Garmin told me that he had checked with the satellites and we were now in southern California. Cool. I had only been down here once before and that was a couple of years ago. Oh man, was it ever good to see some sunshine after 25 or so days of rain back at home. Also, being a short sleeved shirt in Vancouver is a huge disadvantage. Cooler temps and lots of rain mean less play time. I seem to get shelved a lot. Wouldn’t it be nice to live down here all the time…

Left In The Dark

Michelle and I have taken to meet during the week for an evening training run. Great way for both of us to get our behinds out there and not find an excuse.

We are still recovering from the 50km on New Year's Day and I have been avoiding road running as much as possible to give my heels time to heal (pun intended). But where to do you run after dark if not on roads or illuminated paved bike paths?

A bit of a slow week. Monday's run was shelved because of a sick child, no excuses for the other days:
